Books
This page targets more of our German speaking friends but some books are also available in English. Likely the best book to get started with "hands on" shark interaction is “Shark-Human Interaction.” We are currently in the process of translating “Freediving with Sharks" which should be available by fall...
Books, written by Erich. Some of the German written books are not available in store anymore but are occasionally sold on AMAZON.
“Shark - Human - Interaction” is our bible. In here you will find answers to every question you may have about shark interactions, scenarios and environmental factors. The book finishes with a complete list of all the common shark species you can encounter as a swimmer, snorkeler, diver and most importantly what their most interesting behaviors are when getting close to humans. We consider it our “must read” when getting in contact with the buggers.
As you can imagine, this book is the translation of “Mit Haien sprechen.” Although the editor put a lot of emphasis in this book, the translation reads somewhat awkward. Not because it is not written well but some of the wording does not clearly describe what was originally meant, likewise there is some poor choosing of words.
“A Shark’s Smile” is the translation of “Das Lächeln der Haie,” done by Werner Steinert, a friend of ours. Although we do not offer this book in our shop, we can give you the contact to buy it directly from the publisher.
SOLD OUT! This book is no longer available in our shop. Individual pieces may still exist (check Amazon).
Our bestseller, “Haie Menschen Begegnungen” is an up to date book that deals with every aspect of interacting with different shark species. this book describes what to look for when at a beach, on a sandbar, close to a river mouth,in the evening hours, while swimming, diving, and snorkeling. This is the book for you if you like to know all there is about interacting with sharks.
“Mit Haien sprechen,” summarizes our understanding of sharks when getting close (from both sides).
If you are interested in this type of knowledge, we suggest getting “Haie - Menschen - Begegnungen” which is currently available in its 4th print.
Freediving is one of the most intriguing and fascinating watersports. This book “Freitauchen mit Haien” explains in detail where freediving with sharks differs from SCUBA or snorkeling and how to best approach a shark. Due to the time limit of one breath it is crucial that a freediver makes every minute count: how and when to descend and how to approach a shark. This book is currently translated.
“Hailexikon" is the first encyclopedia on shark interaction. Over 500 entries that revolve around this topic, from the effects of beeping sounds of dive computers or strobes to the effect of blond hair or the mysteries of the USS Indianapolis. Whatever relates to sharks, every thinkable impact or effect is found here. Is it color or contrast that is luring for sharks? Have there been man-eating sharks? Is there a functioning shark repellent? In order to find what you are looking for; the index covers more than 1000 synonyms. Since the book is flooded with cross-references, it is not a book to read from A to Z but indeed an encyclopedia.
Children are the leaders of tomorrow, and the earlier they are educated and fascinated on an issue the better. Most children love sharks and many books already exist–but not in German. This book was written to fill this void. It sees sharks through the eyes of 8 to 12 year old kids. A must for every teacher of that age bracket who wishes to correctly inform his/her students.
“Haifunfälle” is the first attempt of combining all of the different subjects when it comes down to shark bites. Why, when and where but you will also find all the needed recommendations of what to do when it boils down to a face-off with a large shark. All our recommendations as well as “Do's and Dont's” are also listed in our other books, or can be downloaded as PDF’s from our other websites.

If you enjoy stories about white sharks, this is the book for you. In the early days of white shark interaction we did not use cages and simply jumped in with them. So you can imagine that things did not always work out as planned… fun times, one way or the other.

“Körpersprache” is out of print. Contact the office if you would still like to get one, we have a few left. This book was my first attempt to describe what we knew about body language of sharks. Almost everything is still valid but over the years we have evolved quite a bit in all the different areas. By now, it is considered a collector’s item.
